Position Summary:

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks a dynamic, innovative, collaborative, and service-oriented individual for the position of Head of Kenan Science Information Services. Recently opened in 2010, the Kenan Science Library is a campus focal point for e-science information services, and provides a coordinated location for liaison and collection development activities in the physical, biological, and earth sciences. Leading a team of librarians, this person oversees the operation of the Kenan Science Library, provides coordination for science information services and vision for the development of new, innovative approaches to e-science and data management. Additionally, the Head of Kenan Science Information Services will collaborate with staff in the Health Sciences Library to build strong interdisciplinary science collections and services, especially those supporting data intensive and team based science involving the biomedical sciences.

Education Requirements:

ALA accredited master’s degree in library or information science.

Qualification and Experience: Required ALA accredited master’s degree in library or information science. Minimum of three years of related professional experience. Supervisory experience. Demonstrated science subject knowledge, and experience with relevant online resources. Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities effectively. Ability to think creatively in developing and promoting the use of collections and providing services, such as workshops, course-integrated instruction, and other outreach efforts. Strong commitment to public service. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work well with diverse population of faculty, students, and academic colleagues. Preferred Significant study or a second advanced degree in chemistry or chemical informatics. Experience with data sets in numeric or other formats (images, GIS, video, etc.) and well as SciFinder Scholar and other chemical databases.

Position Summary:

Known for its leadership in collaborative online library success, NC LIVE seeks an innovative, curious, and flexible colleague to join a seven-member team of librarians and information technology professionals serving the state from NCSU Libraries on the campus of NC State University.  This newly-created position reports to the NC LIVE Executive Director.

 

Responsibilities

The Web/UXD Librarian will have primary responsibility to design, develop, and maintain the web and mobile interfaces of NC LIVE’s digital library services and collections.

Web and Application Development

  • Provide hands on leadership and vision in the development, support, integration, and administration of NC LIVE’s digital library websites, portals, and discovery systems
  • Conduct ongoing research into the development of new digital library interface capabilities, enhancements, and user-centered design trends
  • Partner with member library staff to maximize access to and use of NC LIVE’s digital collections through creative web design that improves the patron’s discovery experience
  • Provide frontline support for digital library services through NC LIVE’s content management systems and library relations systems
  • Participate in consortial planning, by serving on committees, taskforces, and teams

 

Member Relations and Outreach Support

  • Track and identify trends in use and user behavior to assist colleagues in building orientation, awareness, and training initiatives for member libraries
  • Provide digital library consulting services to member libraries
  • Build relationships with member librarians and digital library service vendors to ensure the best match of service to organizational needs

 

Qualifications

Required:

  • ALA-accredited MLS, or equivalent degree in library or information science
  • Relevant experience, including design and development of digital applications library services in an public, academic, or special library environment
  • Knowledge of and experience with current and emerging web development technologies as they contribute to digital library services and user experience of students, library patrons, or researchers
  • Demonstrated commitment to creative, high-quality digital library services
  • Evidence of ability for ongoing professional development and contribution
  • Knowledge of data standards prevalent in libraries
  • Relevant customer service experience in a library, educational institution, or other knowledge-based organization

Responsibilities
The Online Service Librarian is a part of a seven-person team of librarians and information technology professionals focused on raising the bar of digital library services across the entire spectrum of libraries in North Carolina. The successful candidate will work in the following areas:

Member Relations, Outreach & Partnerships

  • Act as outreach liaison to a cohort of member libraries
  • Assist with the implementation of outreach plans and events
  • Build orientation, awareness, and training materials and initiatives for member libraries
  • Provide customer support for, monitor and facilitate the resolution process of technical issues related to NC LIVE sponsored content and services using customer relationship management tools
  • Measure and analyze customer satisfaction to inform decision-making processes
  • Use a rich mix of qualitative and quantitative techniques to investigate the success of online library solutions used by and for member libraries
  • Consult with member libraries on issues related to digital library technologies
  • Advocate on behalf of member libraries with service providers and partners
  • Develop relationships with vendors to ensure the best match of service to organizational needs
  • Create and coordinate opportunities for customization of content and services for member libraries

Website Services

  • Write, edit and enhance web content using the Drupal content management system to enable better information integration into member library and NC LIVE websites
  • Track and identify trends in information and access needs of libraries and patrons to build needed products and services

Organizational Planning

  • Develop ongoing assessment and user studies to shape online services, collections and access
  • Collect, analyze and communicate assessment findings to assist the organization in adopting a more data-driven approach to planning and decision-making
  • Facilitate NC LIVE advisory committees by helping them set priorities and formulate recommendations, processes, and guidelines
  • Work with committees and task forces to develop and administer evaluative tools that will help shape new products, projects, and programs of service, eliminate services that no longer meet user needs, and modify existing services to ensure appropriate value delivery
  • Shepherd projects from idea through implementation phases, including requirement creation, testing, and product roll-out and support

Qualifications

Required:

  • ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent advanced degree in Library or Information Science;
  • Previous experience in a library, educational institution, or other knowledge-based company;
  • Demonstrated ability to listen, speak, write, and otherwise communicate effectively with colleagues and customers in ways that build confidence and satisfaction with individual and organizational performance;
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate ideas in group presentations;
  • Relevant customer service and troubleshooting experience;
  • Demonstrated use of technology to deliver instruction;
  • Demonstrated experience in bringing leadership skills to use in the promotion and improvement of instructional services;
  • Proven interest in and experience with improving access to libraries for patrons;
  • Education in or familiarity with content management systems, customer relationship management systems, current web authoring applications;
  • Willingness to travel (valid driver license), perform outreach duties, and engage with people and organizations with similar goals and objectives;
  • Evidence of participation in professional organizations, and engagement in research and scholarship.

Preferred:

  • Experience in more than one type of library;
  • Experience managing and assessing projects and initiatives;
  • Experience developing, writing and managing web content, including help documentation;
  • Experience using content management systems, e.g. Drupal, and customer relations management systems;
  • Experience developing and creating web tutorials, online training, and training materials using software, such as Camtasia, Captivate, Elluminate, Jing;
  • Proficiency with HTML, familiarity with CSS;
  • Familiarity with IP addressing, firewalls, and proxy servers;
  • Experience using image editing software, e.g. Adobe Photoshop, Fireworks, or Illustrator;
  • An undergraduate or advanced degree in instructional design/technology, or other relevant fields (e.g., statistics, anthropology, higher education leadership, etc.).

Under the direction of the Access Services Manager, the Circulation Assistant is responsible for maintaining, updating, and shelving the reserve and circulating collections of the law library.  The successful candidate will work the Circulation desk and respond to basic informational questions about the School, Library, and the Library catalog; public inquiries regarding circulation and directional questions; and refer reference and other questions to appropriate personnel in the law library.  The Library supports the teaching, research, and service activities of a new and growing school.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for assisting the Access Services Manager with all circulation operations (including student employee scheduling), particularly on evenings and weekends. Monitors materials inventory, performs stack maintenance, updates records, and performs book collection filing or has student oversight for filing updates for the collection.  Processes reserves and patron notices.  May be responsible for opening or closing the Law Library.
  • Responds to public inquiries regarding library access.
  • Assists in photocopying and or digitizing materials for interlibrary loan service, electronic reserves, and document delivery services.
  • Answers directional questions and refers others to Reference.
  • Assists with scheduling and monitoring of library study rooms.

Qualifications:

Education

Experience

The incumbent will provide reference and instructional services to library patrons; instruct students and faculty on legal research tools, search strategies, print and electronic distinctions; suggests law titles in accordance with the library’s collection development policy.  Some evenings and weekends will be required.

Experience with legal materials, including online databases; awareness of current trends in legal and interdisciplinary research tools and processes, library automation.

Education:

ALA-accredited MLIS or J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school.

Legal Research Instructor – Duke Law School

The Duke Law School seeks a legal research instructor for one section of its co-taught, year-long Legal
Analysis, Research & Writing (LARW) program, beginning in August 2012. This is a part-time
appointment as Extended Faculty with the status of Lecturing Fellow or Senior Lecturing Fellow.
Description: The LARW program is a required, 3-credit hour course in the first two semesters of law
school. Each research instructor is paired with a full-time writing instructor, and teaches a section of
approximately 27 students throughout the year. Intensive blocks of research classroom teaching and
small-group conference meetings take place during a three-week period in September/October and
January/February. Additional office hours with students and weekly/biweekly meetings with the
research instruction team are also expected.

Qualifications: JD from an ABA-accredited law school is required. Master’s degree in library/information
science is strongly preferred. Teaching experience, preferably in a law or other graduate/professional
