Fostering Internal Communication

Fostering Internal Communication

Online MagazineInside many enterprises, capturing the comments from others, taking minutes from meetings, and developing release reports can still be a challenge to coordinate in one place.  Formats such as word documents and email messages can be dispersed and have no connection to the origin of the conversation. The issue of reporting can be particularly disconcerting for executives and managers who desire to have both a granular view of topics and a better understanding of questions that can lead to conversations or decisions that impact the company core products or services.  While enterprise solutions such as SharePoint and wikis have been brought in to help foster collaboration, many businesses only use a percentage of these tools to coordinate with their colleagues…

Future Ready 365

SLA’s initiative for 2011 focuses members on becoming Future Ready, that is to adopt an attitude of being more adaptable, flexible and confident in utilizing our skills in the new knowledge economy. One activity SLA President Cindy Romaine launched around Future Ready is the community blog FutureReady365, which shares knowledge, ideas and insights on how we are ready for the future.

They would like for each of YOU (students, information professionals, vendors, clients, etc.) to contribute. With a continual infusion of fresh ideas throughout the year, this blog has an opportunity to showcase our strengths and allows us to inspire each other.  Posts of 250-1000 words or videos can be submitted at futureready365@sla.org.

2011 Programming Survey Results

2011 Programming Survey Results

For the past two years, the NCSLA Board has put out a programming survey to gauge the interests and needs of the membership. A big thanks to everyone who has participated in these surveys – your feedback has been critical in targeting topics and speakers for our events and I hope you’ll continue to provide this feedback in the future.

I wanted to “close the loop” so to speak and share our results with everyone. We took an open-ended approach this year and there was quite a bit of raw data to work with. The first thing I did was “code” each response to consolidate similar answers. Example – responses regarding the librarian’s role as teacher, instructor, and trainer, were coded as “outreach/instruction”. Next, I created word clouds for each of the three open-ended questions in the survey: What skills do you think are most valuable for information professionals in today’s marketplace? What areas of training would be particularly beneficial to you? What did you not learn in Library School that you have been/are required to know/do in your current role? Finally, I created one large word cloud using the responses to all three questions since they are all driving towards the same point – the skills we need most today. This visual representation made it possible to identify our hot topics “at a glance”.

I shared the full report with our Board at the January meeting – a few of the most popular topics include:

Communication Skills
Return on Investment (ROI)
Budgeting
Outreach/Instruction
New Technology
Negotiations
Marketing
Management
Creative Thinking
Social Networking
Copyright

Several members mentioned increased opportunities for casual face-to-face networking and we were excited with the high number of volunteers to host February networking lunches and dinners. NCSLA coordinated with Joanie Olivier of Iconitel to present a negotiation skills workshop which also spoke widely to boosting communication skills in general. On May 13th the chapter is co-hosting CareerWise 2011 with NCLA, a career focused workshop for librarians and information professionals in all fields.

Topics on tap for the rest of the year include: budgeting, presentation skills, a panel on ROI, hiring from a management perspective, and more networking opportunities. Stay tuned for additional details on these events! As always, please let us know of any events you might like to host.

Launching Jvenu, LLC.

Hi Everyone,

For sometime now, I have been looking for a central place that I can post and link to my articles. In addition, I wanted to find a way to harness the knowledge of others while helping a large number of professionals learn more about new technology and social media.  In my spare time (i.e. generally evenings and weekends :-)  ) I committed time to develop a new company called Jvenu, LLC. The mission of Jvenu is to become a trusted source for information and consulting. It  is a company that publishes analyses about technology and social tools having an impact on the information industry. Advertising, consulting, and workshops are offered to enhance users experience with various popular web applications.

For more information you can visit Jvenu at www.jvenu.com.

You can also follow all weekly post at:
