On Thursday, June 21, 2012, the North Carolina Chapter of SLA hosted “Crafting a Personal Brand”, a workshop presented by Chris Olson of Chris Olson & Associates. Chris is an expert in developing and managing the brands of libraries, information services and knowledge management groups and was recently named a Fellow of SLA in recognition of her contributions and leadership in the profession. Chris travelled all the way from Maryland just to present this workshop and brought with her nearly 30 years of experience and expertise in helping information professionals communicate the value of their services.
The workshop was held at the lovely Research Triangle Park Headquarters and attracted a diverse group of information professionals from corporate, academic, public and government organizations, as well as independent information professionals. The session began with a presentation by Chris on the elements of a personal branding strategy. Participants learned strategies for managing how they are perceived (their “brand”) both in person and online. Then, participants broke up into small groups and practically applied this information by creating a brand strategy for someone. This “hands on” application of the presentation material was further reinforced by comments and suggestions offered by the presenter. After an engaging afternoon workshop, many of the participants reconvened at Mez Contemporary Mexican Restaurant for networking and dinner.
Many thanks to Chris Olson for sharing her knowledge and expertise with the North Carolina Chapter.
